Miss Jenn's Tips

Encouraging the Artist in your Child

Art is a skill - a learned talent.  Many parents think if their child is innately artistic that they will just become a painter or take a natural interest in art.  I don't feel in my six years that a preschool student is predisposed to be artistic.  It is a learned talent.  They need someone to teach them to see the world for the shapes that make it.  They need someone to show them how to break up an item into easy strokes.  They need encouragement.

Set a time every day to draw with your child.    Art is calming and it takes patience, so use it as a quiet activity.  Maybe before or after dinner when the child is not tired, yet calm.

Ask the child to draw something.  We draw at school every day, so I encourage parents to have the child draw something they learned about during the day.  Don't do it for them, draw your own picture.  Have them draw what they see on your paper - or better yet let them create on and you draw what you see.
