Our Curriculum
Check out the 2010 curriculum overview
We use an age-appropriate, professionally designed early learning program that is state approved. We adjust as needed to challenge our overachievers and to build school readiness skills. The curriculum offers theme oriented weeks throughout the school year that get children excited about learning and exploring.
Each week of fun includes arts and crafts, cooking, sports and fitness, drama, water and sand activities, sign-a-longs, story times, and learning centers. There will be weekly special events, mini-books, educational worksheets, story books, and projects that go along with each theme.
Focus on the Basics
Language and literacy are developed using the multi-sensory Spalding approach and high quality literature. We use the same Zoophonics approach that is used in the Hillsboro school district to introduce the letter shapes and sounds. We have a letter of the week and focus on the basic letter sounds, how we use letters and how letter combinations make up words. This is the foundation for literacy proficiency.
Math concepts are taught in everything we do - songs, circle activities, and in one-on-one math building time.
Music is an important bridge in education for children. It provides a lasting connection to a unit and the concepts we learn. We use morning songs at circle with words and pictures to connect the theme to a child's experience. All the songs throughout the year are kept in a binder and each day our Welcome Song Teacher (this is a student job) can pick a song from as far back in the year as they desire. This rekindles the educational memories and keeps the themes alive in their mind throughout the whole year.
Physical activity is key to a child's ability to focus and learn. Our day is planned so children have several opportunities to be active and move large muscle groups throughout the day. Their ability to focus is greatly increased and their overall mood is greatly enhanced by the endorphins that "chase" games create.
